Workers' Compensation For Contractors
Stay Compliant. Protect Your License. Get Covered — Fast & Easy.
If you’re a licensed contractor in California, recent state law now requires you to carry workers’ compensation insurance, even if you don’t have any employees. Whether you’re a General Contractor (Class B), handyman, electrician, plumber, or other skilled tradesperson, Pacific Edge Insurance can help you get affordable, compliant coverage — fast.
Who Needs Workers’ Comp Insurance in California?
As of January 1, 2023, the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) requires all licensed General Contractors to maintain active workers’ compensation insurance, even if you operate as a sole proprietor or have no employees.
By January 1, 2026, this requirement will extend to all licensed contractors, regardless of classification.
– If you hire subcontractors, day laborers, or simply work on job sites, you’re likely required to carry coverage — even if you don’t consider them “employees.”
What Happens If You Don’t Have It?
-
Your contractor’s license won’t be issued or renewed by the CSLB
-
You can face license suspension, hefty fines, or stop-work orders
-
You may be held personally liable for injuries on the job — even for 1099 subcontractors.
